Got a zoetrope vinyl from Blood Records, Vinyl Moon, or another label? Here's everything you need to know to see the animation come to life.
A zoetrope vinyl has a pattern printed on its surface — usually a series of slightly different images arranged in a circle. When the record spins on a turntable and you view it under a strobe light at the right frequency, the images blend together into a smooth animation. It's the same optical illusion behind the 19th-century zoetrope toy.
Many artists and labels release limited edition zoetrope picture discs. Blood Records is one of the most well-known, regularly dropping zoetrope vinyl editions that animate album artwork right on the record.
Just two things:
A turntable — any standard turntable that plays at 33⅓, 45, or 78 RPM.
A strobe light — or just your iPhone. The Zoetrope It app turns your flashlight into a precision strobe tuned to the exact frequency your record needs.
Put your zoetrope vinyl on the turntable and let it spin at the correct speed (usually 33⅓ RPM).
Open Zoetrope It and turn on the strobe. Point your phone's flashlight at the spinning record. Darken the room for the best effect.
Watch it come to life. The app starts with settings that work for most zoetrope vinyls. If the animation doesn't look quite right, use the fine adjust slider until it locks in.
The strobe frequency is calculated from your turntable speed and the number of animation frames:
Frequency = (RPM ÷ 60) × Frames
Here are some common combinations:
| RPM | Frames | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| 33⅓ | 36 | 20.0 Hz |
| 33⅓ | 40 | 22.2 Hz |
| 33⅓ | 48 | 26.7 Hz |
| 45 | 36 | 27.0 Hz |
| 45 | 40 | 30.0 Hz |
| 45 | 48 | 36.0 Hz |
Want to share the effect on video? Zoetrope It has a camera mode that locks your iPhone's frame rate to match the record's animation. The camera shutter acts as the strobe, capturing the zoetrope effect directly — no flickering, no strobe needed.
Regular flashlight apps don't strobe at precise frequencies. Zoetrope It uses a hardware-level strobe synced to your exact turntable speed and frame count, which is what makes the animation visible.
The most common issues: wrong frame count (recount carefully), room isn't dark enough, or the strobe needs fine-tuning. Use the fine adjust slider to nudge the frequency until the animation locks in.
Yes — it works with any zoetrope picture disc regardless of label, including releases from Blood Records, Vinyl Moon, and indie pressings. Just match the RPM and frame count.
Strobe lights can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. The app shows a warning on first launch. If you or anyone nearby is sensitive to flashing lights, use the camera mode instead — it doesn't use a visible strobe.
Zoetrope It is available on the App Store for iPhone.
